From Canton, Michigan, Winfield entered service with Company C at its organization, as a 2nd Lieutenant at Detroit on August 15, 1862, at the age of 21. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant on December 13, 1862. He was killed in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863.
